mmm juice

I love a good juice. They're such a good way to get a load of vitamins and good stuff from fruits and vegetables all at once. You can literally add in whatever you fancy and it usually tastes pretty good. I have a Philips HR1861 whole fruit juicer, and its one of the best purchases I've ever made. You can put in whole fruits and veggies which saves the effort of chopping and peeling them all.

I usually use Apple as a base then add a selection of vegetables such as kale, brocoli, peppers, carrot, ginger, spinach, celery or cucumber. You can also add in extra fruits for added sweetness.
I also often use The Funky Fresh Juice Book by Jason Vale, which has so many good recipes for just about every type of occasion.

This can be bought from many online sites, including amazon for around £15. Its a great book but obviously not essential, so just mixing things up and seeing what combinations you like is a cheaper option!

Yesterday I made a yummy green juice which was exactly what I needed after going for a jog..

Apple, Kiwi, Kale, Cucumber, Lemon, Broccoli and Yellow Pepper juice

1) add all ingredients into the juicer and enjoy - easy peasy!

Hot yoga

So my newest venture has been taking up hot yoga. Its a session of Bikram Yoga, which comprises of 26+ moves performed in a room heated to around 39 degrees. This obviously causes you to sweat a lot, releasing toxins and it may aid weight loss. To some people it sounds like their absolute worst nightmare but I actually really like the heat so quite enjoy it.
There are different lengths of session, usually either 60, 75 or 90 mins. The first session is pretty daunting, but you do get used to the heat and it does get so much easier and enjoyable. I always feel so refreshed and calm afterwards and its something different to the usual gym/jogging type exercise.
Depending on where you are, prices vary but most places usually do discounted rates for students or deals where you get a certain amount of sessions so its always worth asking.

I aim to practise hot yoga about twice a week, but I find practising sun salutation most mornings really helps to release any tension and energise my body for the day. Sun salutation is a series of continuous movements combined with breathing, which helps to improve strength and flexibility of muscles.

12 moves of sun salutation. Definitely recommend giving it a go!

Breakfast

So breakfast is hands down my favourite (and most important) meal of the day. It kick starts your metabolism, improves your concentration throughout the day and generally (from my experience anyway) starting the day with a good breakfast makes you less likely to binge on sugar and other unhealthy snacks throughout the day.

Its not only important to actually eat breakfast, but also to make sure its balanced. Sugary cereals such as coco pops and frosties are always popular but cause your blood sugar to spike then rapidly fall, leaving you hungry and energy-less pretty soon after eating them. Many of these cereals contain over 5 teaspoons of sugar per serving and high levels of saturated fat, which is never good.

There are so many healthy, easy and tasty options to choose from for breakfast. I like to mix up what I have for breakfast to avoid getting bored, so usually go for things like porridge with a mix of fruit and seeds, natural yoghurt with fruits and seeds, poached egg with wholemeal toast or an egg white omelette.

This morning I made...

Porridge with almond milk topped with banana, blackberries, blueberries, figs, nectarine and pumpkin seeds

This is a quick, nutritious and filling breakfast and can be adapted for any fruits/seeds that you fancy. Porridge oats can be bought either in sachets (I usually get oats so simple - original) or in a big bag which is a lot cheaper and lasts longer. You can also use regular milk instead of almond milk if you prefer.

1) Add oats and milk (I usually do around 30g oats to 180ml of milk) to a pan
2) Cook on a low heat to your preferred consistency and stir regularly. If you like it more liquid/milky then cook for a little less time than if you prefer it thicker
3) Pour porridge into a bowl and top with your choice of fruits and a sprinkling of seeds. I sometimes add a few dollops of natural yoghurt

Hola

Ok, so I have no idea how this whole thing is going to turn out, but I'm going to give it a go. I know theres so many blogs/instagrams/tumblrs around for healthy eating, exercise and general wellbeing but I thought I'd start one from a students point of view.

As all uni students know, we're usually pretty strapped for money so healthy eating isnt always easy. The general consensus on eating healthy is usually 'nah too expensive, I'll just have a pot noodle' but hopefully I can show you that healthy eating can be done on a budget.
I'm a pescatarian (vegetarian but eat fish) and have been for the past 5 years or so, I try to eat/live as healthy as I can (while also enjoying student life obviously) Luckily for me I really enjoy healthy food and try my best to exercise around 4 times a week, alternating between jogging, going to the gym and doing yoga.
So this blog will basically just be me posting recipes and ideas of healthy meals and snacks, exercise tips and things on general wellbeing

enjoy
x
